@cleoabram: This tiny new device can navigate using quantum physics rather than GPS! Normally, a pilot needs four satellites to figure out its location…but this device uses atoms that act like compass needles sensitive to earth’s magnetic field, which is different everywhere! So it can record the magnetic “fingerprint” anywhere, no satellites needed! For more optimistic science and tech stories, follow along! #Science #magnet #GPS #quantum #technology

It sounds like it would be able to handle more air traffic by an order of magnitude

"Optimistic" lol this is clearly military tech for drones and missiles

Spoiler alert: The main application for this technology is going to be hypersonic missiles and kamikaze drones… 💀

To bad the Earth's magnetic field is not a static thing. The North Pole wanders around.

pilots don't need satellites to figure out where they are. There are devices on the ground that ping to them every x kilometers over battle tested flight paths.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't inertial navigation already fill this need? it used to be used on spacecraft, airplanes, and subma, required strain guages and spinning gyrosccopes, be big, heavy and expensive. But now uses ring lasers, can fit on a chip or two, and is still used on subs and in underground mining where there's no GPS signal.

It’s called a quantum compass because it uses quantum atoms as ultra-precise magnetic sensors — but the navigation itself is classical, based on Earth’s magnetic field maps, not quantum mechanics replacing GPS!!!
