I was a DoD (DIA) senior special agent in Aug 2001 onboard the aircraft. The "Doomsday Plane" is the U.S. Air Force's E-4B Nightwatch, a modified Boeing 747 that serves as an airborne command center for the President and Defense Secretary during nuclear war, with a general officer (LTG) overseeing nuclear command functions. Piloted by a brigadier general and a full bird colonel permanent pilots, a general officer (MG or LTG) is always aboard these National Airborne Operations Centers (NAOC) to ensure continuity of command, ready to direct US. forces and manage national operations from the sky if ground systems fail after a nuclear attack.
