“Apache” by The Incredible Bongo Band, released in 1973 and produced by Michael Viner, transformed the original 1960 composition into a percussion-heavy instrumental that would become one of the most influential recordings in Hip Hop history. Driven by its legendary bongo break and infectious rhythm, the song became a staple for DJs during Hip Hop’s earliest years and is widely regarded as one of the most important records in the culture’s history.

The Sugarhill Gang sampled elements of The Incredible Bongo Band’s version of “Apache” in “Apache (Jump On It),” drawing from the original recording’s arrangement, percussion, and unmistakable groove. The sample helped create an energetic party record that connected the culture’s early DJ traditions with the commercial rise of recorded Hip Hop.

Released in 1981, “Apache (Jump On It)” became one of The Sugarhill Gang’s most recognizable records and helped introduce the iconic break to a wider audience. The song gained another life in popular culture when Will Smith and Alfonso Ribeiro famously performed their unforgettable dance routine to it in season 6, episode 5 of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1995. Thirty years later, the moment was recreated in Bel-Air by Jabari Banks and Olly Sholotan, demonstrating the song’s lasting impact across generations of television, music, and culture.
