it always rubbed me the wrong way when influencers film the toyoko kids like they’re zoo animals

Kabukicho is traumatising, you just see 60 old men walking out of brothels in broad daylight

Kabukicho is absolutely bizzare because you will see an upper class white suburban family on vacation casually walking past brothels without even realizing it lol.

The concept of wanting to visit a city to see homeless kids who ran away from being abused by their parents…

I would reckon 70% of westerners who go to Kabukicho are going there because of the Yakuza game series, not because of the young kids.

I feel like we have to differentiate Kabukicho as a district (bc it is very touristic and was remodeled to be that way) and the Toyoko Kids in Kabukicho.
And also differentiate between tourists visiting attractions in the area and content creators looking for struggling kids to farm content from.

Hiii I volunteer with a nonprofit in Kabukicho. The Japanese government has made strong efforts to “clean up” Kabukicho in the last 10ish years and make it a tourist destination. Kabukicho used to be truly dangerous - like regular unalivings and ykza fights. Tourism is kind of keeping a cap on all of this, as the ykza know that they’ll be in a bad situation if they harm tourists. However the behaviour of tourists in Kabukicho and Japan in general is a large concern. Those who have the ability to should a) not stay in Kabukicho and b) maybe make a donation to a nonprofit helping the kids and women in this area. I also organise volunteer events in Kabukicho with the nonprofit that are open to tourists, exchange students, and immigrants🫶

Pointing a camera into anyone’s face, without their consent, especially a minor, is rude, even if it’s a store clerk, at least in my opinion. I go to Japan on an annual basis, visit Kabukicho each time, but I eat and drink there or take pictures of buildings/ neon lights, not people.

you're talking about like 80% of downtowns/entertainment districts worldwide. they are tourist destinations. Japan is not special 🙄

In general I've noticed that tourists kind of treat the whole country like it's a zoo. It's bizarre to watch a crowd gathering just to watch firemen do like their regular job 😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫

kabukicho has some good tiny/hidden bars and some good restaurants, so in that sense it is a tourist and entertainment district... the issue with the kids is a seperate matter cause its not unique to kabuki

toyoko kids choose to stay at a entertainment area for a reason. it's not the other way around. not defending people going there to get entertained by suffering people or kids

Kabukicho is literally absolutely a tourist destination. It's marketed as such. Even the "Toyoko kids" are going there partially because it's famous.
