Historically, artists relied on patronage from the wealthy, which provided financial security and time to dedicate to their craft. Now, the financial burden is so heavy that artists often need to focus on the sheer volume of work required to cover their living costs

yep, it's funny but we do have this type of art nowadays but it's usually in fandom spaces: Animation, videogames, fanarts, mixed media, etc. We even have detailed sculptures.... in anime figures lol. If you think it doesn't apply because "anime is too stylized" then check Dungeons and Dragon's fandom that has the same realistic-like style but not the photographic one but the narrative one and has the same fantasy/religious/dramatic vibe from historical paintings.

Painting has evolved so far past basic storytelling. And storytelling has evolved so far past basic images. We have movies/tv to tell stories now and we have art that is more intellectual, critical, and expressive than ever.

Back in the day, artists had patrons to pay for them to make their art. Usually the church since it was the most earning place back then. Now, if we make it from a modern perspective—it basically means that a corporation would fund an artist to create. Which, knowing that the rise of AI is happening, is very unlikely. While also I want to add that the study of psychology (and intelligence in general) has made people want to look deeper into their art. Which is where we get arts with hidden meanings, including contemporary art come from.

a really good video game artist who does this imo is kang joo sung!! his games may have all flopped really hard but his art is insane and his ability to mix highly stylized anatomy and realism. he makes REALLY great characters with so much expression and personality man

this is also due to ideological changes in the modernist era. the world changed drastically. After WW1, the belief that classical portraiture could portray someone's story or emotion died. this feeling (that art could/should portray an internal or expressive experience of the world, rather than objective experience of the world) was also extremely popular globally. ideology changed with globalization, modernization, and trauma. we live in a new time and our art can look different.
