@ustheremingtons: If you disagree, I am genuinely curious about your views and beliefs. I know we all come from different lives, pasts, and circumstances, and I fully recognize the privilege involved in accessing mental health care. That alone can make this topic hard to talk about. My hope is simply that this continues to motivate all of us to do better, myself included. Gentle parenting is often misunderstood as permissive parenting, but it is not the same. What people call gentle parenting is actually authoritative parenting. It balances clear boundaries, structure, and high expectations with warmth, emotional attunement, an understanding of a child’s development, and open communication. When people say gentle parenting does not work for some kids, it is usually not the children. It is the adults, specifically unresolved trauma showing up in a parent’s nervous system. When we are overloaded or dysregulated, it becomes really hard to co regulate our kids. In those moments, many of us fall back, often unintentionally, on authoritarian practices like sternness, threats, or punishment because it looks like it works. But what is actually happening is the child’s nervous system shutting down for survival. Compliance is not the same as safety or respect. This is well studied in child development and neuroscience. And trust me, I am human. I have caught myself in these moments too, raising my voice or leading with sternness, and I always regret it. As someone who experienced emotional, physical, and mental abuse as a child and who is still actively healing, I am deeply passionate about this. Not from a place of judgment, but from lived experience and research. I say this with so much love. We can always do better. Our children’s development is deeply influenced by our own healing. When we work on regulating ourselves, we give our kids something far more powerful than obedience. We give them safety. And from safety, everything else grows 💜 #gentleparenting #parentingtips #parent #motherhoodunfiltered #momlife

I hate that people don't and cannot identify what gentle parenting actually is. My kid will definitely get disciplined if it's needed but I'd never hit my child or threaten my child. If I feel they need to sit in their room to breathe then they will because as an adult I get overwhelmed and I'm sure it's worse for a child who doesn't know how to regulate these emotions or if my child is being disobedient in public I'll wait until we're in private and talk to them about how their behavior wasn't very nice. A lot of ppl assume gentle parenting is when you allow your child to walk all over you and it's simply not. You can correct the child without being physical.

As a kid who was spanked (and frankly hit in general as a kid) I don’t know what’s best. I’m a teacher who sees kids not listen because there are no consequences. I also am a parent of a 2 year old who is lost when it comes to dealing with the big emotions of my kiddo. Yesterday she had a meltdown for 15 minutes in the middle of target because I wouldn’t carry her through the store. I truly feel lost, so really what is the best?

As a social worker specializing in work with children, I am shocked by these comments. Hitting children is never acceptable under any circumstances and can have a serious impact on their personal development.
