They both make a lot of sense for their times. The original (1998) was full of pre Y2K optimism, "Look how far we've come! It's only going get better" The new version however, it's now been nearly 30 years since tge original production, and we've come to realize we haven't come as far as we would have hoped. The new version is saying "We haven't achieved that dream yet, but we're still holding on."

I like both, but the new version works as well as it does because of who they’re telling this story to and who the focus of the reprise is at the end of the show. Such a phenomenal production.

I didn’t know about the change going into the show when I saw it in November and I almost started sobbing in the back row. So good. 😭 This show holds such a special place in my heart (I was in a community theatre production in high school).
