@sacramentourbanmedia916: A Kansas man has been sentenced to prison for shooting a high school senior during a confrontation that stemmed from a water gun game involving his daughter, authorities said. #RubenContreras, 49, received a sentence of just over three and a half years behind bars for shooting 18-year-old Anakin Zehring . A jury convicted Contreras of aggravated battery in November 2025. The shooting occurred around 4:45 p.m. on May 11, 2024, at a Walmart on West Kellogg Drive in Goddard, Kansas. Zehring and two friends had arrived in a blue Chevrolet Spark as part of a game commonly played by high school seniors known as “assassins,” where participants are assigned targets and use water guns to “eliminate” them. According to a probable cause affidavit reviewed by Law&Crime, Contreras’ daughter and her boyfriend were entering the store to pick up supplies for her older brother’s graduation celebration when the teens pulled up nearby. The occupants of the car were reportedly yelling profanities and shouting, “I’m your senior assassin.” Zehring then removed a gel blaster — described as a toy gun that fires small water-filled beads — and shot the pair. The girl and her boyfriend told investigators they did not recognize the teens. After being hit with the gel beads, the couple went inside the Walmart. The boyfriend later exited the store to confront the teens and claimed one of them insulted him and told him to meet behind the store. Store employees eventually forced Zehring and his friends to leave the Walmart, and the teens walked to a nearby Dairy Queen before returning to their vehicle several minutes later, court records state. By that time, Contreras’ daughter had called her father to report the incident, and he arrived at the parking lot. The daughter and her boyfriend sat in their vehicle waiting. As Zehring and his friends got back into the Chevrolet and began to leave the parking lot, they noticed a man running toward them. Zehring slowed down, believing the man was attempting to cross the crosswalk. Instead, Contreras reached the car, pulled a black Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun from his waistband, and fired a single shot through the rear window, striking Zehring in the lower back. The vehicle continued moving before crashing into nearby shipping containers. Zehring was struck in the kidney and liver and began screaming that he could not move. The two other teens fled the car and ran into a nearby field. First responders transported Zehring to a local hospital. Police located Contreras at the scene with the firearm still in his possession and placed him under arrest.#viral #fyp
