One of the most exhausting parts of being anxious is always trying to understand from an avoidant person’s perspective. Avoidant people are often said to distance themselves because they are afraid of getting hurt and to protect themselves but they end up hurting the one who stays. Me being a anxious person while liking an avoidant person feels like standing on a battlefield where the enemy lives inside me. I tried so hard to understand her, her silence, her distance, her need to disappear but while understanding her, I slowly lose myself. It becomes draining, to the point where I no longer know what I truly feel. I am constantly fighting an invisible war: Do I choose what my heart feels, or do I choose her comfort? Do I stay true to myself, or do I keep shrinking just so she won’t leave? I don’t want to lose her, but I get exhausted by a love that comes and goes without warning, one night filled with laughter and warmth then suddenly days or weeks of absence.
In the end, I lost her. I lost her because I slowly became avoidant. Rather than telling her what I truly felt, I chose myself and my peace. I withdrew to protect my heart, and because of that, what we had ended.
