@ancienttreesofvancouver: Giant sequoias are the world’s largest trees, with the oldest living individuals over 3,200 years old. Some of these giants were already growing during Ancient Egypt’s New Kingdom, when Ramesses III ruled. At their most extreme, giant sequoias reach about 11 meters (36 feet) in diameter at the base, roughly the footprint of a small house, and can rise to 94.8 meters (311 feet) tall, comparable to a 30-storey building. They grow high in the Sierra Nevada, within a narrow elevation band of roughly 1,200–2,400 meters (4,000–8,000 feet). Driving up steep, narrow mountain roads, the climb begins in a dry, rocky, canyon-like landscape, where vegetation is sparse and trees remain small and widely spaced. Then, almost abruptly, the terrain softens and levels out, and the forest opens — and the giant sequoias appear, immense and unexpected, standing high above the valleys. Beneath their massive trunks, mule deer move softly through the forest, sharing the land with black bears and elk. Today, only about 75,000 old-growth giant sequoias remain on earth, confined to roughly 65–75 isolated groves scattered along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada. For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples respected these trees, but in the 1800s, with the arrival of settlers, widespread logging destroyed many of the ancient giants. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, public outcry led to their preservation through parks and conservation laws. After more than a century of deliberate fire suppression, natural fire cycles were disrupted, allowing forests to grow unnaturally dense. Today, controlled burning and selective thinning are essential, as giant sequoia ecosystems depend on fire to regenerate, reduce fuel buildup, and remain healthy. As climate change places the remaining old-growth groves at renewed risk, these trees must remain protected and untouched by mankind forever, not as resources, but as living witnesses to deep time and the natural history of Earth.
