@museumofscience: How does an LED light change when dipped in liquid nitrogen? 💡 Museum Educator Adelaide demonstrates what happens when you plunge an LED into liquid nitrogen. The LED shifts from orange to green, all because of physics. As the temperature drops, electrons need more energy to jump the LED’s “band gap,” causing the light to change color in real time. #Chemistry #ScienceExperiment #CrazyFacts #ScienceExplained #ScienceFacts
And to think blue LEDs almost never existed and were really really difficult to figure out

can you tell me why the LED lights suck so much energy from us as humans vs the incandescent bulbs lol

for a second I was worried the liquid nitrogen would get into the wiring and mess with it. and then I remembered what liquid nitrogen is: nitrogen

Interesting that it takes more energy! I would have guessed it took less, due to better conductivity, allowing a greater flow from less resistance, making the wavelength shorter (higher energy).

Would cooling violet LED emitting ultraviolet? Would cooling ultraviolet LED emitting X-ray?

So is this shrinking the anode and cathode contacts, therefore changing the distance the electronics have to jump? Then that would change the color?

but at ln2 (77K) the distance of the gap gets smaller.

How does this relate to green lasers being especially dangerous when pointed at someone? Is it because more energy is needed which results in damage to the eye because of that strength?
