@curtisagardner: End of week rolls around, I’m 30 hours ahead of the next guy on my team. Should I slow down and stop pulling work to help the guys out or pedal to the metal and pull more work? Tell me whatcha think. #dispatching #workflow #mechaniclife #shoplife #automotivetechnician

I see a lot of guys bullshitting while i’m locked in. I’ll take what I can get especially being the one of the only master techs & the only ev senior authorized in the shop. Most of my work is low paying warranty so I have to flood myself with work. Granted most of my work is already set for me. I usually work the first 8hrs doing heavy diag/warranty then the last 4hrs doing gravy. I also am never against stopping and helping answer questions or looking into hard problems with other techs.. But I also believe if they wanted to have more hours/work they would 1. Work more hours or 2. Pull more work & stop yappin lol. I should note it also depends on how busy the shop is because that changes a lot of it.

I also hated the BS where if you weren’t kissing the dispatchers butt then you were getting the crap work or not much work at all

If you are a foreman in that shop you should be helping techs get better. That’s being a leader. If you want to be an hour killer you shouldn’t be a foreman just a line tech. It really depends on how management see you or the shop as a whole. That would dictate your situation.

Again it all depends on the type of work you’ve been doing or they have been doing. There has to be fairness; Yes I know that’s uncommon in a shop. Again it’s the flat rate bullshit. It should be abolished altogether

The paycheck is made out to you. So you need to take care of yourself

There is an " i " in the word TEAM I take advantage of it. I also do not share very well, especially when it comes to my pay. Did you see the " i " yet...it sits in the middle of the " A hole ", yep I'm an A__hole when it comes to my paycheck.

Get work absolutely as long as it’s not cherry picked gravy.

As long as they had every opportunity you did and you’re not cherry picking then they need to stop being rewarded for working slower.

Depends on the dispatch. If you’re responsible to dispatch to your team then you should know how effective your teammates are. ( I would overload them to see if they could keep up) If you’re not responsible, keep it up. Don’t ever drop your productivity for anyone. You will regret it. Some people don’t have Flat rate mentality. Just poor me mentality.

What do you think you would ask your technician to do. (If it was your company)

Depends. Is it cause they suck, or is it cause there’s no work? If the latter, dispatcher needs to provide some parity. If the former, their problem….

Hot take. I used to be the guy who would rack up hours and then pull 1-2 cars a day the rest of the week. It took a toll on my mentality because they just started using me and weren’t appreciating anything. 1 guy playing with a 3D printer. 2 talking all day long in the other corner. I stopped. Now I’m flagging 30% of the shop hours or more weekly. 1/11 people making 1/3 of the hours. Is it fair to them? No. But being the outgoing/nice guy wasn’t fair to me. Take care of yourself. You go to work for money, not for friendship

Honestly, first come, first serve. That’s flat rate. But if they’re concerned with the other guys not making hours, then in reality they should make you guys hourly lol

You do you… for me if I make 50+ hours and the rest of the group is close to hitting their 40, I usually tell the dispatcher to give the work to the guys that didn’t make their time yet. 😅

Do what you can to help the other guys elevate to you level, but dont sacrifice your own paycheck to do it. Not everyone is cut out for flat rate. Certainly not me.
