What school or what state? We’ve been doing OG private tutoring for 3 years and I just feel like we’re barely treading water… and if I need to temporarily relocate an area with an actual school, I’m willing to do it.

My daughter has dyslexia. We paid $400/month to a private speech therapist for 4 years, ages 6-10. IT WAS WORTH IT. She’s 23 now, just graduated from an SEC university.

My mom did this for me in fifth grade. I went from reading at a kindergarten level to reading at a middle school level in 3 months. It completely changed my life. Today I read 25-50 books a year and am currently in graduate school working on multiple degrees. Sending love ❤️

So why can’t everyone know what they are doing so families aren’t paying tens of thousands of dollars for intervention??

I’m a teacher and suspect my daughter has dyslexia. Those videos of teachers saying just read to your kids make me so sad. It took so much for me to get my daughter reading, a lot of phonics. I truly feel like her school did not do a good job helping her and I feel like I did it all myself.

I have taught kids with dyslexia for the past 10 years at different programs for kids with LBLD. Even with daily, hour long phonics intervention it’s highly unlikely that your child is going to make 4 years of academic growth is 3 months. Especially given the fact that they are already 3 years behind, this means it’s probably pretty severe case of dyslexia!

As a mom of two kids with dyslexia, I went back to college to be a special education teacher. It has really helped me understand how to help them more. I’m also a huge fan of take flight, and I think it’s amazing!

I saw a teacher say that reading to kids does not teach literacy! And its not our fault that kids are not reading. I also think that we are pushing kids to do too much too early.

It’s really concerning that teachers are still out here saying that reading aloud to them is the key. That’s just really not the make or break especially when it comes to reading disabilities

I will say that as someone who has a child with dyslexia. multiple things can be true here at once. Reading to your child will not teach them to read. Statistically we are also not reading to our kids over all as a culture. Reading to our kids can however increase comprehension by supplying a lot of comprehension skills which in itself is priceless especially as I have watched my child finally begin to grasp reading.

😭 But did you try and sue the school first??? They should have paid for out of district payment placement or hired a CALT to provide speciality instruction. You guys pay taxes, you shouldn’t have to take a loan to get her the help she needs. Super unfair!

I literally couldn’t read till I was in 4th grade but I could speak 2 languages fluently and had a 12th grade spoken vocabulary before I could read.

We were lucky that our elementary school did Orton Gillingham with our daughter for 5 years. Also adhd meds so her brain could focus. Your daughter is very lucky to have you as her advocate in this journey.

I’m a CALT that works in a school district in TX. I serve 35 kids, daily, with dyslexia therapy in the school setting. I’m in TX. Texas doesn’t do a lot right with education, but they are leaps and bounds above a lot of states when it comes to dyslexia. I wish more states treated it with the right approach so that all families can have this kind of access to therapy.

As someone who spends thousands a year for private speech sessions, it hurts to hear that I’m going to have to spend thousands more to test for dyslexia.

I have dyslexia reading did not click for me in till maybe 4th or 5th grade. By 8th grade I had a 12 grade reading level. The hardest part about growing up with dyslexia. ADHD was never getting to find things I was talented at. my extra curricular was tutoring.

As as educator, 1 in 4 kids have it. It’s so much more common. I’m thankful for my school who is working on early intervention using a reading intervention program with these kids. We have seen so much progress with it! I’m so glad you are advocating for your kid! Not all parents are familiar with it or know what to do.

Not true! Teachers don’t say that. The problem is money! Schools aren’t hiring enough interventionists.

Everyday I tell my husband how blessed we are. Our daughter was diagnosed in 1st grade and out town has a school that is only for dyslexic children that goes up to 8th grade. It's about 10k a year to go but she is on state scholarship. I have heard there are families that move from out of state to attend this school.
