@marilynthescientist: How does the blood bank actually know what blood is safe for you? 🤷🏽‍♀️🩸👀 You’ve probably heard the word crossmatch, but this is what it looks like behind the scenes. There are different types of crossmatches, but let’s keep it simple. This one is called an immediate spin crossmatch, and we only do it when the patient has a negative antibody screen and no history of clinically significant antibodies. We take the patient’s plasma and mix it with donor red cells, then spin it immediately at room temperature. Basically, we’re asking one question: is anything in this patient’s plasma about to start a fight with these donor cells? After the spin, we gently resuspend the tube and check for agglutination or hemolysis. If everything looks smooth and quiet, the unit is compatible and can be issued. This type of crossmatch is all about ABO compatibility, not hunting for unexpected antibodies.
