I’ve lived in both, and for me the difference is real. In Sydney, I’ve had clothes stolen from my washing line. I’ve been chased by a man late at night while walking to my car. I don’t walk around with headphones in. I cross the street if someone is coming towards me after dark, and I hold my keys in my hand. I also worked in news for over ten years, regularly reporting on violent crime across Australia. When you see that kind of stuff every day, it stays with you. It changes how you move through the world. For me, it made me more appreciative, but also constantly aware of people and my surroundings. In Dubai, I can walk at night without thinking twice. I don’t feel on edge. I’ve never had anything stolen. I don’t feel like I need to be on guard all the time. Insane, right?
