@lyss.ramen: Replying to @Fi thank you for all the love and positivity! I teach at a title I fully inclusive school and I love my school and district. I’m aware that much of what I have in my classroom is not considered necessary but it’s just how I choose to spend my money and it makes me happy doings so. I’m the most extra person ever and I love to go above and beyond for my students, so this was my decision and I have no complaints about it and I wouldn’t expect that expense to fall on anyone else. I am so grateful for the support and resources that are provided by my school. For example, I’m able to print at my current school. In my previous school I was limited and also unable to print using color so I had to purchase my own printer, toner, and paper in order to make materials for the students. This was unfortunate as I was a special education teacher with no real curriculum so I was in charge of creating the content for my kids. I didn’t want my kids to only see black and white, especially when they were trying to learn things like color identification. My current school also offers things like model AAC devices for edcuators to use which I LOVE and think is amazing. Last year, I had purchased an iPad and the AAC software at my own expense in order to be able to teach and model it for my special needs students as it was not provided to me as a special education teacher. My school is great and really values and focuses on equitable and inclusive practices and they provide amazing support in those areas. I know that all students are different and maybe my set up wouldn’t be ideal for certain kids or educators but my students are thriving in this environment and I would make adjustments if they weren’t. I know that being a teacher is just a job, but I’m also very aware that my job makes a direct impact on the youth. I don’t always know what my students may have going on outside of school or what struggles or challenges they might be facing. So it was important for me to create a space where the students felt safe, happy, and loved. We spend a lot of time together. We are a classroom family and the classroom is basically their second home so I wanted it to feel that way for them. I know school can be an escape for some students so I just always want to give them my very best. My students are happy and excited to learn and that’s what’s important to me so it’s all worth it.
