Pay attention to how humor is used throughout the movie. In addition to simply making the audience laugh, do you notice any other ways in which it functions in the story?

I love that final “as you wish” from the grandfather. It really is such a sweet moment that I don’t think gets enough attention

Very few movies are perfect 5 stars at just the 10 minute mark and holds it for its entire runtime. Princess Bride is Reiner’s magnum opus in my opinion even though he has so many that any answer can be correct. We really lost someone who truly understood the human connection.

Rob Reiner had a generational run of bangers in the 80’s. RIP to the legend

I remember I picked up this book in middle school but I put it down because I thought it was abridged and I wanted to read the unabridged first, but then I read it in HS when I realized the abridged version is the OG 😂

Humperdinck gathering his sleeves when Westley tells him to sit is such an underrated bit. Kills me every time

I know this is the point of the variety of films you chose but it still blows my mind how many classics of so many different genres Rob Reiner made. He truly was a remarkable storyteller

I’ve seen this movie many many times and have never picked up on the theme of stories being worth telling! I knew it was a good framing device to invest us in the grandfather/grandson dynamic, but just never put the dots together on Reiner pointing out that it’s STORIES that help us build those connections. Great analysis!

Just to add - in the book “Goldstein” talks about how he first encountered Morgenstern’s work - when he was sick his father (an immigrant from Florin) and he falls in love with the story. When he rereads it as an adult he realises that the book is long and boring and his father was abridging it on the fly, which is why Goldstein is now officially abridging it. So in the film, we’re watching Goldstein (“the grandson”) as a child, before he grows up to become a writer

At my middle school growing up, this was the default “filler day” movie (like for substitute teachers, indoor lunch/bad weather days, after testing, etc.). My biggest memory of it was that EVERYONE was always excited to watch it—girls, boys, younger grades, older grades… everyone. Your analysis explains why, but I always loved that it was a “something for everyone” kind of movie and it never felt like a compromise for anyone.
