As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner as well a someone who has struggled with weight let me first say the horribleness is crazy work.
Calling it “a discipline thing” assumes everyone in a larger body lacks self-control. That’s not how human biology works. Weight is influenced by genetics, hormones, medications, pregnancy, mental health, trauma, socioeconomic access to food, sleep, stress, disability, and yes sometimes behavior. Reducing all of that to “they chose this” is intellectually lazy.
Second, even if someone did make choices you disapprove of, that doesn’t justify denying basic participation in society.
Clothes aren’t a reward for virtue. They’re a basic human need. We don’t say: smokers shouldn’t get coats, people with diabetes shouldn’t get shoes, people with debt shouldn’t get housing. Punishment-by-denial isn’t discipline. It’s cruelty dressed up as motivation. Third, it confuses “having choices” with “deserving consequences imposed by others.”People have choices about lots of things. That doesn’t mean strangers get to enforce consequences on their bodies. Adults are allowed to make choices you wouldn’t make without being socially exiled for it. Fourth, it doesn’t work even on its own terms. There is zero evidence that shaming, exclusion, or humiliation produces sustainable behavior change. What it does reliably produce is depression, anxiety, disordered eating, avoidance of medical care, and worse health outcomes. If the goal were health, this approach fails spectacularly.
