What consequence do you recommend in that situation?

But what if they only listen when we yell? Consequences or not, if I yell they will listen, if I don’t yell they won’t. I freaking hate yelling.

Can dysregulation also be a cause?

This is what we do and our 5 yo kiddo listens really well. We also have a rule where if we ask/tell her to do something and she doesn’t like it, she’s allowed to ask ‘why?’ Sometimes that results in a conversation and the ask changes based on her feedback, and sometimes it doesn’t. We’ve established with her that it’s our job to keep her ‘happy, healthy and safe’ so if something is not a choice, we tie it into one of those things so she understands. I will say though that we do have to repeat ourselves very often, but it’s because she’s like my husband, and has an auditory processing delay. It drives me CRAZY but they can’t help it 😭

Off topic, but I really like your content. Could you recommend some books my ex and I read as we’re separating and moving into our own homes to help our 5.5 year old very sensitive and emotionally intelligent boy. Also any book recs for introducing future partners down the road. Thanks!
