my district doesnt allow us to fire overnight for this exact reason. i can only fire while im in the building

Never trust a kiln sitter, you need to be at the kiln when you expect it to finish and then use welding goggles to look into your witness cones, once your target cone starts to fall then manually shut off the kiln.

The Post placement is odd. The shelves should share a post at each corner in the center and one post at the center of the shelf on the edge. This is def overfiring low fire clay. That’s a lot of loss, sorry.

Try using pyrometric cones. And check if your cone sitter is calibrated to make sure it shuts off in case your timer fails. What cone were you trying to fire to?

I’m so sorry this happened!! I did this last year during my third year, but I did it to the clay. I didn’t know you could melt clay! Look at it as a right of passage as an art teacher, I hope you’re able to get all the glaze off and the kids are understanding and you can try the projects again.
