Curtis knew Deena was smart. That’s why towards the end of the movie Curtis kept her on a short leash and when she went outside of him and had meetings “behind his back” he told her she can’t even do anything without his permission.

I agree with this! I do think she pushed Effie onto Curtis because if she didn’t Effie wouldn’t have wanted to continue touring or doing business in the first place. As long as something was drawing Effie’s attention, Deena’s dream would become reality.

Yes there was manipulation from Curtis, that’s how he treated EVERYONE like pieces on a board game. Your avg salesman/manager. This take on Deena is insightful and accurate. She defs wanted to be a star. That is probably why casting directors chose Beyoncé because they possessed that go getter quality.

I saw another version of dreamgirls and in the beginning of the movie when curtis was outside smoking, he saw deena arriving late and he was attracted to her from the beginning.

this movie shows a great difference between a worker and a thinker. like in corporate, the people in senior level roles are getting paid for how they think and strategize which gives the workers something to produce. Deena was a thinker. effie was a worker- a hard worker at that and she expected to be "compensated" for her work. that industry requires both work and strategy and the strategy matters more than the work itself especially if you've got a good one. Deena was good enough in her work and excellent in her strategy and that's why she got ahead of effie. Effie was too focused on her work and eventually you distracted by having Curtis in her bed thinking he would secure her. Yes looks play a part in all of this as well. But the crux of it is thought-leader vs worker bee.

I can definitely see how she played the game. I do think she was manipulated (all of them were by that man 😭) but then she fell in love with him. Now if it was the infatuation with her or the image and power he created for her, IDK. I don’t think the affair started until way after Effie clocked it and by that time Effie was so removed from the group (hence her replacement) so it almost felt like it was okay. All that to say, I like how complex they allowed Deena’s character to be for the movie instead of watering her down to a cheater and just pretty.

I love deena I don’t think it’s this simple. She was manipulated she wasn’t a bad friend and she wasn’t playing Effie I think there were a lot of elements that caused things to swing this was. Curtis played n her hunger and innocence and Effie made it easy to be mad at her. Deena wanted to be great
