1. It’s okay to mess up and not be perfect. When kids feel like they’re not good enough, our instinct is to pour on praise. You’re so good. You’re so great. But when great is all they ever hear, it becomes the bar, and they feel they must clear it every time. That doesn’t build resiliency, it creates anxiety. So we make room for the truth: it’s okay to mess up, because that’s how we learn. I’d rather raise a daughter who can fall down, learn, and keep going than one who’s afraid to try. 2. Social media isn’t bad. She’ll get her hands on it one day, so I’d rather teach her now, while she’s still next to me. So much of it is selling something, and it’s easy to feel like you need it too, or to scroll until you feel worse without knowing why. So instead of hiding it, we watch reels together and talk about how it’s not all bad. It’s a lesson in balance, and in noticing how what we watch makes us feel. 3. Being kind to yourself matters as much as being kind to others. She can be hard on herself and call herself bad when she makes a wrong choice. We reframe it: making a wrong choice doesn’t make you a bad person. I knew it was sinking in when she told me her friends say Taylor Swift is bad for using bad words, and she said, “using bad words doesn’t make her a bad person, she’s just a person who uses bad words.” 4. It’s okay to talk about money. We’re honest when something isn’t in the budget. We talk about real trade offs, like making dinner instead of getting it delivered. I don’t want money to be a mysterious, stressful thing she figures out at 18. I want her growing up understanding how it actually works, a little more every year. 5. It’s okay to be bored and let your mind wander. We take screen breaks, and we get the classic “I’m so bored.” We tell her it’s okay to be bored, to use her imagination, because we won’t always have someone to play with, and we have to be okay with our own company. Usually we say go do something for five minutes, and she ends up having fun for thirty. What are you working hard to teach while they’re young? #parenting #mom #socialmedia #lifelessons #jjyapchallenge
