I took my cat to Starch last Wednesday. I made the appointment for signs of pain and discomfort, and not being as energetic. Dr. Stroh (the vet) came in to the appointment and immediately gave Boo her rabies vaccine. It was NOT expired and NOT why I made the appointment. She then asked if I had any concerns. I told her the reason I made the appointment and the symptoms, she said “she looks fine, all I can do is diagnostics”. I’m already rubbed wrong because I felt unheard when the exact reason I went was to get diagnostics. I asked about bloodwork vs. x rays and since there seemed no sign of physical injury we decided to start with bloodwork.  Boo was in the back for 2 minutes before I heard the most awful scream come from her. Please keep in mind I HAVE WORKED VET MED, boarding, rescue, grooming. I know better than anyone that these places cause added stress (especially for cats) and can make them act out in ways they never would at home, but I also know MY cat and have personally seen her in these situations hundreds of times. I know how she handles it all, and she has never ever ever made a sound like what I heard. Boo is naturally docile. She had stomatitis as a kitten and got used to being handled like this young. She is even always complimented at this vet for how easy and calm she is, so I immediately knew something was wrong.  After hearing this, I didn’t get my cat back for over twenty minutes. I heard hushed voices in the hall and my cats name multiple times. I was doing my best to stay calm without knowing the full story or 100% that it was my cat. 10 minutes after they took her, a tech came and told me that she saw another cat and was spooked. I calmly told the tech I don’t believe that story and wanted my cat back. I have had many other pets and fostered for years, Boo is used to seeing other cats in all kinds of scenarios, including in a vet setting.  After about 10 more minutes Dr. Stroh walks into the room saying “you’re not such a bad ass” to my cat and tried to laugh it off that she didn’t like seeing another cat. I said “I don’t believe that” and the vet took a step towards me (sitting down, by the way) squared her shoulders to me, and said “what do you think happened?” I demanded my cat back and tried to explain my frustrations as calmly as I could. Almost immediately she just up and walks out of the room without a word, so I think she’s just leaving. She grabbed another vet and gave a very dismissive statement to them about my concerns. This new vet was kinder but clearly trying to move the issue along and get it over with.  Before Boo went to the back she was walking around the room, exploring, even waiting for the vet at the door. When I finally got her back she hid behind me in the corner of the wall for the rest of the visit. She didn’t even want me to touch her.  I called the practice manager (Christina Little) the next day to talk about the issue. She heard my concerns but seemed confused when I asked what I could expect in terms of a follow up, and asked what I wanted. The discussion is about my cat possibly being injured in their care, and she wasn’t even planning to follow up with me. I knew the story of her simply seeing another cat was not the full one.  I was told I’d hear back Monday (yesterday) at the latest but I did not. I called them twice today to get my own follow up. The practice manager let me know that Boo had seen an angry cat in a cage, she was scruffed to get blood, freaked out, and got loose. They claim she wasn’t lost for long and was easy to grab again, but she was gone for a very long time AFTER I heard her scream. I heard their hushed voices for TEN minutes. I was also informed today that this incident had left Boo with a hematoma that I was NOT TOLD OF the day I brought her in. Hematomas can sometimes require surgery to fix and I was not informed at all. I am running out of characters, but was then hung up on by the practice manager. #vet #desmoines
