@nguyendynastyco: Part One: Words from the artists: Coming from different backgrounds within the diaspora, Vy and I found common ground in our struggles in understanding our identities, queerness, and love for community particularly through dance & movement. As Viet Kieu, and mixed in my case, we don’t have a solid script or context to follow, and thusly live and feel relatively estranged existences from our motherland culture and people. And yet we are still solidly vietnamese in our blood and bones. We wanted to demonstrate building a bridge of closing that identity gap by tapping into historical vietnamese dance styles, costume, and beauty standards. We chose then I designed our costumes based off of Tran dynasty clothing, pre ao dai, referring to our ancestral country’s deep ties to colonialism and constant struggles to maintain the vietnamese ethnic identity, but also mainly because it is both of our families namesake. By mixing traditional Vietnamese music and American RnB, we built a landscape in which we were able to honor ancestors and heritage, while also simultaneously taking on the journey of living new lives in our modern day. The tandem braid represents that feeling of being tied to tradition and form, by removing our clothes and finally unburdening ourselves of the braid, we are able to freely choose to embrace our culture in a new and safe way. One that includes new stories, bloodlines, and loves in all their amorphous forms.” xoxo Sigh 💜 #vietnamese #vietnameseamerican #burlesque #burlesquedancer #aapi
