Folks deeply invested in church-as-business systems tend to defend the system when it’s challenged, instead of listening to people who were hurt by it. So how do we fix it. It’s simple. Do what Jesus actually said and do it together. For the apostles, church wasn’t a Sunday building with a stage, four polished songs, and a 20 minute talk shaped by consultants. It was people joining together to make “on earth as it is in heaven” real. Feeding the hungry. Welcoming strangers. Clothing the poor. Visiting the sick and imprisoned. Matthew 25 wasn’t poetry. It was instruction. We don’t serve to gain. We serve because a heart remade in Christ overflows that way. That’s what faith with works actually looks like. When’s the last time your pastor washed feet in the community with no camera, no promo, no Sunday slide deck. Most CEO churches are full of people who want to lead but won’t serve the least. And that starts at the top. The early church met in homes, shared life citywide, and used gifts for the good of all. It wasn’t perfect, but it reshaped civilization. Today, most church budgets go to staff, buildings, media, and growth strategy. Outreach usually sits at the bottom. Often that money goes back into brand expansion anyway. Millennials and Gen Z see the gap. They’re not leaving Jesus. They’re leaving the system. And they still want community. If our budgets for buildings, salaries, AV, and marketing outweigh care for the poor, the addicted, the imprisoned, the refugee, we need to ask the hard question. What’s the point of church.
