@back2thebible: You might be reading Genesis 1 wrong! There’s lots to ponder in the way creation is described in the opening words of the Bible, but remember that it’s not a science textbook! The Bible is interested in telling the story of earth and humanity, and the Creation story is about God imposing meaning and order on what He has made. Even a literal reading does NOT say that the sun was created after the earth. For much more on science and the Bible (do they contradict? Is the Bible pro flat-earth?) watch the full unscripted in-the-moment Q+A with Bible expert Dr. John Neufeld on YouTube. #sciencevsgod #faithvsscience #biblequestions #genesis1 #Christiantiktok

This further shows that “creating in six days” doesn’t mean 24 hour day cycles. We cannot know what a day is to God but it’s possible that’s it much longer period of time that we would think. God can see all of time, He doesn’t not view it as we do so it’s important to understand that.

Also the Hebrew word for day did not always mean 24 hrs. It can also mean a period of time. I’m taking it more as a poetic telling of the order of creation

The verse., let there be light, literally means God created the photons for light to travel. The source of light was already there. There was as no photons for it yet.

I don’t think it is reasonable to argue that the Earth, Sun, Moon and stars were created in Genesis 1:1. It is not defined, yes, but not a fair reading to include those specific bodies aside from the Earth. Genesis 1 is saying the Sun was created later and so was the moon. But it doesn’t matter because Genesis 1 is not trying to give us a science history lesson. It has another objective. It is about God’s ability to create and his decision to stop and rest. It’s about creating spaces and filling them with life. It’s a poetic narrative about God’s personality and character which is then juxtaposed with Adam’s in Gen: 3. We don’t need to reconcile science with Gen: 1.

Nope it says the earth was created then on the 4th day the sun/moon/stars are made “And it was so. And God made the two great lights, the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night, and the stars” Genesis 14

I dunno why it makes any difference. anything powerful enough to create a universe can certainly do it "out of order" without a problem. not like the physics He created can stop Him.

If you take the periods interpretation the 4th day refers to the great oxygenation event and the plants on day 3 refers to photosynthetic life

In the Hebrew text of Genesis, a distinction is made between how God “creates” and how He “makes.” Genesis 1:1 uses the verb bara (“create”) when referring to the heavens and the earth, a term that in Hebrew is used exclusively of God and implies bringing something into existence, not merely shaping existing material. When the sun and moon are introduced in Genesis 1:16, the verb used is asah (“make”), which in Hebrew commonly means to fashion, appoint, or assign function. This indicates that the luminaries are not being created from nothing at that point, but ordered, formed, or given their roles within an already created cosmos. Always look for context.

Genesis never said God created Jupiter but it exists so we know he did it. Probably is part of the heavens which means the sun is included too, along with all the other stars and planets

I love how Genesis 1 is treated as a scientific account of creation, when that was never its purpose. Genesis isn’t trying to catalogue objects or mechanisms; it’s a poetic telling of God’s relationship with His creation at the beginning. It’s centered on people and meaning, not on material processes or scientific processes.

The distinction between "created" and "formed, made" isn't there. Man is "made" (make has same root as made) in vs. 26 and created in vs. 27. The Heavens are created in vs. 1, while the sun, moon, and stars are made in vs. 16. Whales are created in vs. 21 - the same "created" used in vs. 1. CONCLUSION: The "beginning" in vs. 1 refers to the entire first week.

Something else to consider is that there are two creation stories. An interpretation that I am fond of is that the first one is simply an illustration of the hierarchy of creation. Seeing as man is created last, we are the crown of creation.
