The boycott began in October 2023, after the war in Gaza started. Starbucks Workers United, the baristas' union, posted "Solidarity with Palestine!" on X. Starbucks sued the union over its name and logo, saying the post damaged its reputation. The boycott spread across the Middle East, the US and beyond. In January 2024, then-CEO Laxman Narasimhan said it hurt US sales, blaming "misperceptions." Starbucks' Middle East franchise operator, Kuwait's Alshaya Group, cut about 2,000 jobs. Starbucks' reason skips why these stores weren't making enough money. In 2024 it said the backlash hurt US sales, and its closure announcement doesn't say whether that recovered. We think the boycott is a big part of why they're closing. Union baristas began a separate boycott August 25 demanding a contract. Labor judges found Starbucks broke federal law in most of over 100 cases. A Brazilian farm reportedly kept Starbucks' ethical seal after 20 workers were rescued from slavery-like conditions. Over 700 stores have unionized since 2021, still with no contract. A 2023 Senate report found Starbucks faced more labor cases than any other private employer, and in 2024 the labor board found over 60 violations in Buffalo, NY alone. Boycott Starbucks.
