@doctor.bing: How you praise a child teaches their brain how to handle challenge failure and stress. Effort focused praise builds resilience adaptability and long term learning. Small words can make a big difference. #BrainHealth #LearnOnTikTok #TikTokLearningCampaign #Neuroscience #MentalResilience
In Montessori, it is very common to respond to a child who is proudly showing off their work with “you worked so hard on that!” Rather than “good job!” Or “that looks great!”. Acknowledging the hard work and effort put forth by the child empowers them & validates their efforts.

My brother says, “succes is in the effort not the outcome” and that’s helped me several times in my life.

Did this wrong when my kids were young. How can I help them now as young adults?

It’s so hard not to say “good job” or “you’re so smart” 😩

I fear this happened to me. I grew up being praised for being “intelligent” and “gifted” so when I was in college and actually had to study to do well I had a mental breakdown. I changed my major from nursing to public health because I felt I was too dumb for nursing. Now I’m pursing nursing now @ 30 because it’s still what I wanna do. I’ve learned to embrace the process now but it took a lot to get here.

💯 - also when you tell a kid they’re so ‘smart’ too often, it becomes their identity and they’re less likely to try things for fear of failure, which is the opposite of a growth mindset

My daughter tried a sewing project (she has never sewn before) and I hear her say “practice makes perfect” when she caught an error. ✨✨

My 5 year old daughters response to defeat is “thats okay though, I did my best” because we did our best & all we have to do is continue trying!!

Yes! I call my kids smart. BUT, because I’ve learned about neuroplasticity AND the growth mindset, I follow it up with, “and do you remember what smart means? It means you don’t give up when things are hard. It means you keep trying until you figure it out.” I also call them bubble gum brains (a growth mindset book for children).

I used to say to my son, “Do you think babies are born knowing how to do that? No, everyone needs time to learn and understand.”
