You shouldve put Die, My Love too in it. Then it would be a trifecta of anxiety inducing motherhood drama.

My biggest takeaway from Hamnet was how beautifully it shows that art can help people grieve and process loss. I loved that the focus was on Agnes and her loss as a mother. It felt just as validating to finally see Will break down after playing the ghost.

I love that both these films are directed by women- you can just feel it while you’re watching and you get more interesting/complex portrayals of motherhood

Tbh I think the marketing for IIHLIKY really made the film suffered. I remember going to the movie thinking it was a comedy and I literally had a panick attack watching it and checked out completely. I had to go a second time to genuinely enjoy it, I think Rose Byrne was fantastic in it but the product that they are selling you is not the one you are getting when you go and watch it. Other than that I agreed with most of what you said.

Saw if I Had Legs and that scene of her charging into the ocean while the waves are crashing down on her is something that will be seared into my brain for a long time. Really great imagery of someone who wants to try to escape their life, if even for a moment.

don’t forget that even tho hamnet portrays motherhood in a much more “palatable” way to general audiences, it is still getting some incredibly misogynistic criticisms of it being emotional manipulative oscar bait

I also think, from the box office standpoint point, Hamnet has the built in audience of the books. I wouldn’t have seen Hamnet in theatres if I hadn’t read the book. All the news I got of the movie was from the author.

Ooo I haven’t thought about the thread of the rejection of patriarchy via the acceptance of nature, but it’s so true

I just looked it up and Hamnet was released in 750 theaters, while If I Had Legs I’d Kick You had a very slow release and in total it released in 250 theaters. So this probably had a huge impact on the box office numbers.

Love your commentary on If I had legs, I’d kick you. I’m sick of films romanticizing motherhood and this is one I haven’t seen yet!! Just found your account and I’m in love with your thoughts on films 😊

I knew Hamnet was coming out cause I saw trailers and posts about it. I didn’t know that Legs even existed until it was nominated and still then I had no idea what it was about until I looked it up.

The desperation Rose depicts at the end of the movie is heartbreaking because you watch all the characters fail her at every scene. There wasn't a moment I wasn't rooting for her because of the story and Rose's acting.

I mean, you may be partially right, but the bigger issue was simple marketing. I couldn’t watch anything for a while where I didn’t see a “Hamnett” ad, story, news, and yes, tik tok. I barely heard about “Legs” and had to seek it out to watch it. I never gave this take a single thought. Loved it btw.

Rose and Heath had their first main character movie roles in the movie Two Hands, Heath won his Oscar, I’d love to see Rose finally get hers

Ones a 35 million blockbuster and ones an independent filmed over 27 days so the fact they both won golden globes is amazing for IIHLIKY 👏👏 I enjoyed your reflections on the motherhood takes

if I had legs suffered from lackluster marketing. you can't negate the effect of that.

I agree completely. Hamnet is an easy, comfortable watch for modern feminist audiences. If I had legs I’d kick you pushes you, as do some of these other films. Buckley was terrific, but the movie was not revolutionary especially compared to the others we saw last year and even the book
