@castlesofscotland: Buchanan Castle is the site of an earlier castle, historically owned by Clan Buchanan who are known to have held the estate of their name since at least 1231. On the death of the last laird of Buchanan in 1681, the castle and estate were bought by the 3rd Marquess of Montrose (of the Graham family). In 1836 the castle passed to the 4th Duke of Montrose. He married Caroline Beresford in the same year and both were involved in breeding and training racehorses and during their time the parkland was used for horse racing. Buchanan became a renowned training establishment for racehorses; the names of their most successful horses were given to holes on the golf course which was later established on the park. In 1850 the original castle burned down and the 4th Duke constructed the current building which became the the official seat of Clan Graham. In 1936 the castle and grounds were converted into a hotel and golf course. During World War II, the castle was used as a hospital and part of the golf course used for farm cultivation to aid the war effort. One of the hospital’s patients was Rudolf Hess, Hitler’s Deputy Fuhrers when he crash landed in Scotland in 1941 in an attempt to negotiate the United Kingdom’s exit from the Second World War. His next accommodation was the Tower of London. After the war ended the castle was briefly used as a school, however soon fell into ruin. In 1954 the roof was removed in order to avoid taxes, and the decline of the building began. #Scotland #castle #hiddengems #visitscotland #abandoned

Is it weird that I’ve always had a dream of exploring in the woods and just so happen upon an old rundown mansion or even a castle and just silently repair the place and clean the property and bringing it back to its former life and just maybe have the possibly of owning said place and property 😐🤷🏻‍♀️
