Light is so obviously smarter than L, Near, Mello and anyone else in the show. In the first half of the show when Light and L were competing with one another L had to uncover a huge public figure’s identity (Kira’s) while light had to uncover L’s identity. Light was simultaneously maintaining his public image as well as keeping up with and outplaying L throughout the series. The entire show was designed so that neither had an advantage and so that it was purely based on smarts and strategy which light won by being offensive aswell as defensive whereas L played defensive, this is also shown in their game of tennis- resembling their competition/race to uncover the others identity and foreshadowing L’s defeat. L’s background and upbringing easily matched with Lights advantages too given that Light had two death notes, two shinigamis and two kiras to help alongside him (neither of which helped much at all) which he had obtained by manipulating them and influencing them with his actions as Kira. Light also faced extreme difficulties giving L the upper hand but still came out on top. For instance when Misa almost got them both found out. L’s resources were undeniably far more useful than the death note given that their goal was to found out the others identity while Light was a high school student with a book that kills people’s if their name is written down and you’re thinking of their face. Overall Light is definitely smarter. And Near’s victory was badly written and simply illogical too given that it is outright impossible to replicate an entire notebook to each exact perfection and detail, especially in such a small amount of time that Near had been provided with until the time of the meeting with Light. Near would’ve had to fill roughly 820-900 pages with a rough amount of 134,400-125,000 names; this is very obviously not possible to achieve in only one and a half nights. Rendering the ending to be a completely irrational and unrealistic way for Near to win, if it wasn’t for plot Light would have won it that moment and thus come out victorious.
