Here's a quick tip about the authentic recipe from Germany! 🇩🇪 I love this combination, but just a fun fact to clarify the name "Himmel und Erde" (Heaven and Earth): "Himmel" (Heaven) actually refers to the apples because they grow high up on trees, and "Erde" (Earth) refers to the potatoes because they grow in the ground. The traditional way is to prepare smooth mashed potatoes and separately simmer the apples with a bit of sugar (keep them as a compote or mash). You then either mix them together or serve them side-by-side, topped with plenty of caramelized onions and fried blood sausage. Hope this helps to enjoy this wonderful German classic even more! An die Deutschen hier. Himmel un Ädd ist Kartoffelpüree und Apfelmus. Himmel un Ädd mit Flönz, da kommt dann auch die Blutwurst dazu.

My family makes a dish we call penanoia and it’s supposedly from our German side. It’s potatoes boiled with a carrot per potato (if you’re using big American russets) and fried bacon and onions that you mix into the mash and it’s to die for.
