Before she became one of the most unexpected voices in American art, Corita Kent was a nun with a pair of scissors, a screen printer, and an extraordinary ability to notice what everyone else ignored. Let’s dive in. From taking the name Sister Mary Corita at 18 and joining the “Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary”. But instead of separating herself from contemporary culture, she became entirely obsessed with it. Corita started by making screenprints filled with fluorescent color and fragments of everyday language in Los Angeles. Where Andy Warhol turned Campbell’s soup into an icon of consumer culture, Corita could take the language of Wonder Bread or General Mills and transform it into something almost spiritual In a strange way. Her classroom would quickly become a legendary She encouraged students to slow down and actually look, to find extraordinary things hidden inside ordinary life. One exercise involved using a small cardboard viewfinder, sometimes called a “finder,” to isolate tiny fragments of the visual world. Her philosophy was essentially that Nothing is ordinary if you learn how to see it. During the Vietnam era, her work would address war, racism, poverty and injustice in a way that would stamp her into culture forever, let alone her decades of teaching that’s a whole other post in itself. She would pass away from cancer in 1986 at 67. Leaving behind Corita didn’t believe creativity belonged to some separate artistic universe, that something millions of people walked past every day could contain an entirely new way of seeing. Something I believe that is more important than ever with our current space In art history.ph
