💛 Endometriosis Awareness Month 💛 I was around 15 when the pain started, I’m 31 now. For years I was told it was ‘normal’, ‘just bad periods’, ‘anxiety’ or my favourite ‘all in my head’. In 2018, a GP looked me in the face and told me it was impossible for me to have endometriosis. It was later that night I was diagnosed with Endometriosis via ultrasound (which is very rare and not the norm) in the emergency department. Since then… • Had 4 laparoscopies for endo, 1 ablation and 3 excision. • Had bowel and kidney involvement • My left ovary removed • Both fallopian tubes removed • Frozen my eggs • Spent 9 months in chemically induced menopause via a cancer drug • More hospital admissions than I can count And I didn’t just “try the pill.” I’ve also tried hormonal pills, multiple medications, antidepressants for nerve pain, nerve blocks, pelvic floor Botox, ketamine infusions, nerve medications, pain specialists and a million more things. You name it, I’ve tried it. When you’re in debilitating pain every day you’ll try anything to get your life back. The hardest part wasn’t just the physical pain. It was the grief, the emotional toll this all takes, the fear I’ll never be a mother, the medical gaslighting and the constant advocating I’ve had to do to prove I was sick enough to deserve help. Endometriosis is not just bad periods, it’s a complex full body inflammatory disease. It can affect organs far beyond the uterus and has been found on every single organ in the body including the lungs, kidney, skin and even the brain. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt throughout this journey it’s YOU KNOW YOUR BODY BEST!!!!! Trust your gut and if something doesn’t feel right keep going. Seek another opinion, find a doctor who listens and one that respects your wishes. Do not shrink yourself to make someone else comfortable (doctor or not). Being heard changes lives and earlier diagnosis changes lives. Remember, are never too young to have endometriosis. And to every person navigating this disease, I see you and know I will always continue to fight for us all 💛 #endometriosis #endoawarenessmonth #endo #endometriosisawareness #endometriosissupport
