You can also just use QuickTime to record it! That’s what I did when I recently converted all of my family VHS tapes. Ended up making a YouTube channel, and making all of the videos unlisted, so it’s easy for the rest of the family to watch anywhere.

that works but you get extremely shitty quality due to all the processing and conversions. if you want the best quality you need to invest a lot more effort into it. there is a tool called the domesday duplicator which reads the raw RF signals from the head of the VCR and converts it to a digital signal they can be decoded and by modern software. no signal noise. also you want a VCR that has multiple heads for better quality

My setup was slightly different to get the best quality as possible. I used a S-VHS player for VHS tapes and a S-video camcorder for the VHS-C tapes. Both also have TBC (Time Base Corrector). I use a certain brand and different type of capture card that only uses S-video and composite to increase the quality. Finally, I record it using VirtualDub with recommended modified settings.

Everyone should check their local library before they buy any gear. I live in San Diego (California) and our library offers free digitization for lots of formats!

if they’re hi8 or digital8 tapes and you have a camcorder and any desktop pc, you can buy a FireWire PCIE card, and plug the camcorder directly into the PC card and digitize the tapes in their original, uncompressed, lossless format
