@sacramentourbanmedia916: #ClarenceBelton was the sole Black officer involved in a North Carolina drug raid when he was shot more than ten times by a white police officer who mistook him for the suspect. At the time of the 2019 incident, Belton was employed by the Gastonia Police Department and assigned to an FBI task force. He survived the shooting and later filed a civil lawsuit against the officer who opened fire, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Heather Loveridge. Loveridge has sought dismissal of the case, arguing she is shielded by qualified immunity—a legal doctrine that protects law enforcement officers from personal liability unless they are shown to have violated a clearly established constitutional right. A federal district court initially rejected Loveridge’s claim of qualified immunity. She appealed that decision, and last year a federal appeals court vacated the ruling, directing the lower court to take a closer look at whether the doctrine should apply in her case. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit also ordered the release of video footage from the shooting, which the district court had previously kept sealed. The unsealed footage was obtained by the Charlotte Observer and made public in October.#fyp #viral
