This activity had turned a place meant for prayer into a marketplace. Why Jesus overturned the tables? Jesus reacted strongly because of three main reasons: 1. The temple was being disrespected Jesus said: “My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of robbers.” He believed the temple was meant for worship, not profit. 2. People were being exploited Pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem often had no choice but to buy animals there, and money changers charged unfair exchange fees. 3.
