@healthytoons0: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and the Nissen Fundoplication surgery. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) GERD is a chronic condition where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus due to a weak lower esophageal sphincter (LES). It causes symptoms like heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain, chronic cough, and difficulty swallowing. Long-term GERD can lead to complications such as esophagitis, strictures, Barrett’s esophagus, and increased risk of esophageal cancer. Nissen Fundoplication Nissen fundoplication is a surgical treatment for severe or refractory GERD. The upper part of the stomach (fundus) is wrapped 360° around the lower esophagus to strengthen the LES and prevent acid reflux. It is usually done laparoscopically and indicated when medical therapy fails or complications occur. Common postoperative effects include reduced reflux, but possible side effects are gas-bloat syndrome, dysphagia, and difficulty belching or vomiting. Disclaimer: For educational use only.
