Whatever your baby falls asleep to — that is what they will look for at 3am. If the breast, the rocking, or the soother is the last thing they experience before sleep, it becomes the sleep requirement. ⠀ 1️⃣ Sleep onset associations are formed through repetition. When a baby consistently falls asleep with a specific stimulus — feeding, rocking, a soother, motion — the brain files that stimulus as a prerequisite for sleep. At every cycle boundary during the night, when the brain surfaces into light sleep, it scans for that stimulus. If the stimulus is absent, the brain treats the condition as unmet and signals wake. ⠀ 2️⃣ The 3am feed that takes 5 minutes and the baby goes straight back to sleep is not hunger — it is an association reset. The breast or bottle is the stimulus that was present at sleep onset. The body woke to find it missing and called for it. The calories are incidental. ⠀ 3️⃣ The way to change this is to change the last experience before sleep. Not to remove comfort — to move it earlier in the routine. Feed before the bath. Bath, then book, then bed drowsy-but-awake. The feed is still there. The sleep onset association shifts to the crib and the sleep environment instead of the breast or the rocking. ⠀ 4️⃣ This is not always possible at every age. Under 12 weeks, feed-to-sleep is appropriate and often necessary. Between 12 and 20 weeks is the optimal window to start introducing the crib as the sleep association before habits solidify. After 6 months, the habits are established — change is possible but requires consistent effort over 2 to 3 weeks. ⠀ This is the exact reason I started using an app called Napcue. It learns my baby's real patterns, tracks wake windows automatically, and gives me a heads up when the sleepy window is about to open so we're not crashing past it. Bedtime went from feeling like a guessing game to being a quiet notification on my phone. ⠀ Link in bio @napcueapp 💜 #babysleep #sleepAssociation #feedtosleep #babysleeptips #newmom
