@helenabradbury.travel: One of the best things we did in Kyushu was rent a day onsen in Beppu! ♨️ Beppu is a city famous for its hot springs and you can see steam rising from the ground around the city, food is cooked in the steam and you can visit the Hells of Beppu, 8 hot spring pools in vibrant blue and red colours that are dotted around the city. But if you want to experience a hot spring here, you could either go to a public onsen, stay in an onsen hotel or you can rent a day onsen. There are several around the city and we went to Sakura-yu which allows you to choose the style of room you’d like to rent, you usually get 90 minutes to enjoy the onsen and there are full shower and changing facilities inside the room you rent. (the manager here is a cat too in case that persuades you further!) Sakura-yu also had open air rooms so we were able to open the door and look out across the lush, misty greenery from our onsen pool. Day use onsens in Japan are a great option if you don’t feel comfortable using public onsen baths or if you’re a mixed gender couple or group so you can’t enjoy public baths together due to the separate gender baths.
