Cyrus Carmack-Belton’s mother told reporters that she’s inundated with racist comments on social media about her son’s shooting. “Nobody can tell me that this is not racially motivated, because I'm not supposed to be on social media anyway. But when I go and I look at my social media, I have racist people coming to my page, going under my son's pictures, leaving the most horrific things,” Nicole Carmack, standing with Cyrus' father Troy Belton, said at a rally in Columbia, South Carolina, on Wednesday (June 3). A jury on Monday found ex-gas station owner Rick Chow not guilty of murder for fatally shooting 14-year-old Cyrus after accusing him of shoplifting bottled water, which he had not. Cyrus had a loaded 9 mm gun on him that he didn’t display inside the store, but Chow’s son, Andy Chow, testified the boy pointed it at him after Chow and his father chased him and the boy tripped and fell. Prosecutor said Cyrus never pointed the gun but it may have from him when he tripped. Jurors deliberated about eight hours on Monday before acquitted Chow of murder. He left jail that night, where he’d been since his arrest on May 29, 2023. Cyrus’ mother said she learned on Wednesday that South Carolina prohibits evidence of prior acts by a murder defendant, so jurors din’t know of Chow’s previous violence. “It’s just showing that it's okay to treat black and brown people wrong, and it's not. My son loved everybody. He would tell me, like, 'Oh, Mom, you're being judgmental. You shouldn't do that. That's against God. And the devil shot him dead. He laid right there, and we got no justice from South Carolina,” Carmack said. #law #court
