Giving birth in Japan is quite affordable, especially when you compare it to the U.S. Even with induction, a longer stay, incredible food, constant care, and hands-on postpartum support, the final cost felt… reasonable. Almost gentle. The childbirth lump-sum allowance covers a huge part of the cost, and what you’re paying for isn’t just the birth itself. It is the recovery, the education, the support, and the way they ease you into motherhood. It felt very mother-centered, not just baby-centered, and that made a big difference for me. Is it free? No. Is it affordable compared to America? Very. Is it worth it for the level of care? For us — 100%. That said, there’s been news about possible changes to the system, so things may not stay exactly the same in the future. Which makes me even more grateful for this experience. I’m curious!
