when speaking to our dj he asked us for a list of songs to gauge our vibe and said to “pick songs that are good for your crowd, not songs that you think are good” - my suggestion would be to maybe throw in something metal adjacent that would scratch that itch but not have people leave the dance floor (ie 2000s pop punk)

Some throwback heavy metal - like 90's song might be nostalgic in a throwback set. Ask your DJ to intertwine a couple of songs that would work with the commercial stuff.

So I like a lot of punk music and I just realized it’s not wedding music. We did a night at home where we both made a list of music and we ordered in and got a few bottles of wine and we stood up and played 30 seconds of each song and no matter how much we loved it if we didn’t dance to it, we pulled it off the list

Do any of his friends like heavy metal? Could there be one big moment for his favorite metal song, and the emcee announces it’s a number for all the guys (for example)? Otherwise… I agree with you it’s not the vibe for cocktail hour either. Best for the grooms suite during getting ready

Go for 80s glam metal happy medium

My advice to everyone—trust a DJ. Don’t go with your favorites either. But for him—does he like some mainstream heavy metal like Metallica? Black Sabbath?
