It's important to be whimsical but know that it's whimsical.

My bestie taught me to ask the Parking Fairy for a car park before I arrive somewhere if I’m worried it will be too busy. Its been at least a decade and I tell you it feels like it works so often 😂🧚

I’m atheist, but I find myself talking to my son who died last year, visiting his grave, thinking about reincarnation (he was atheist too, but that was his favorite theology/myth). Like I know, and yet it brings me comfort. I also am ok with wishful, hopeful, magical thinking in general. We celebrate Christmas and love Santa. I guess, so long as it isn’t harmful, I don’t see the issue. It can be fun, healing or fill some other need.

I like a little whimsy in my life. I think it can be fun and helpful in moderation. Just as long as you aren’t fully relying on it to guide you

I use tarot as a ritual, not because of any magical element it may have but because it gets me reflecting and focusing on things in a different way.

I feel it's often a form of communication w our subconscious. and that is probably the opposite of harm

You can pry my magical thinking and whimsy out of my cold dead hands. It’s just for fun

personally, I can be really woo, but my line is it's never "instead of" anything. I'm not putting a crystal in my pocket instead of going to the Dr. I'm not digging into my astrology instead of going to therapy. I'm not doing a money spell instead of showing up for work. It’s just silly little things that make me happy on top of what I'm doing anyway.

I'm an atheist but I read tarot. I feel like it helps me process feelings im not fully conscious of/ignoring and explore them.

I think it can be whimsical and a great way to move through life with a lighter spirit and a joyful mind. But like anything, it can be taken too far, I suppose. But on the whole, no, I don’t see anything at all wrong with it!!

if the magical thinking is deliberate and a conscious construction, i think it’s could really just be re-packaged imagination/visualization, which imo is powerful. neuroscience shows our brain’s don’t sharply distinguish between imagination and what we refer to as reality. so long as the magical thinking is not replacing real-world needs for the person engaging, i would argue it’s actually beneficial and could be an avenue to bettering the world

I think magical thinking is beneficial when we are otherwise powerless, and can be that little bridge of hope until we find solutions. But dwelling in it too deeply can stunt us.

i like humanisation for home. i used to "put my home to sleep" and i struggled a lot with cleaning house but have very strict personal higiene (and for family), so this humanisation made me feel like yeah, we wash ourselfs everyday and home needs this too. like floors are hair. they need swipe everyday like brushing but washing every few. kitchen is head and dishes are teeth etc.

I don’t believe in the god of theism, but I do believe in mystery. I’ll continue to do so until the origin of the universe is concretely known. So yes, I think there’s some wiggle room because the truth is we DON’T know everything. Great post! Thank you!

I don’t think it’s a woo-woo thing, but I started finding and naming my parts. I’ve a house for my parts in my head and a table around which we gather 😁 and it kinda comforting and making my life better. As I give voice to my parts, they stopped sabotaging my choices

as a religion scholar— i think magical thinking is an inescapable part of the human experience and is not inherently harmful. but i also think we would be better off if everyone learned how to notice when they were engaged in magical thinking so that they can consciously appreciate the value it brings them while being better able to steer clear of any occasions for harm.

My current take is that as long as it doesn’t hurt yourself or others, that’s humans humaning. However, with AI growing, it’s more important to be realistic and use our critical thinking skills as much as possible! My mom is giving my 18 year old a ring for “coming of age” gift. His inscription (note to his self) is “Focus on what’s real”.
