In my opinion, the reason Jesus said it’s difficult for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God isn’t because they are inately bad (because of their wealth). It’s because when a person lives in splendor, it’s very difficult for them to turn to a higher power in any need. Unfortunately, humans turn to God more often than not when things get difficult. A rich person, however, has their money to protect them. It’s more a statement of fact (what Jesus said) rather than a moral judgement. However, when a person goes through hardship first, and then gets rich, that’s a different story. Just look at the tale of Job. God literally blessed him with wealth after putting him through fire. If wealth was a moral judgment, then God wouldn’t have rewarded Job with wealth.

I think it’s another option: it’s because they love something more than Jesus. Whether they believe He is who He says He is, or they reject Him outright altogether. They are holding worldly creations in a higher position than the Creator. God’s Word says the LOVE of money is the root of evil: not simply having it, but LOVING it. Jesus asked the rich young ruler that question the way He did because He already knew the answer: He knew that the man loved the creation so much he would never be able to put it in its right place and make the Lord the Lord of his life. Jesus wasn’t literally expecting that man to give up everything and deny his family. He was calling out what He already knew about His heart (see the end of John 2), and was highlighting that unless you are willing to make Him LORD of your life and “love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your might, and all your strength,” you cannot fully belong to Him. Many wealthy people view their possessions (including the power it grants) as their security and it becomes their god. That’s why it can be more difficult for them to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. I believe it’s often easier for those who struggle to find solace in God - they see their need for Him and trust Him to provide. There are poor people who also refuse to believe and hold onto their little gods, just as there are wealthy people who are able to keep it in its proper place and still treasure the Lord above all else. But I do think those are fewer and farther in between. So what it boils down to is this: what do you love? Because that determines who/what you will serve, and who your master is.

If you read commentaries on this part of the Bible then you will start to understand that this isn’t about all rich people going to heaven or not. We get to heaven on grace alone. Not one of us is worthy, rich or poor. These verses are more about your heart, your faith and where those two align. Is your faith in money or is it in God? Where’s your idols? When God blesses us with wealth, do we use it to bless others?

My thoughts will not be a popular one. I feel a lot of people pick and choose what they follow as far as the teachings of Jesus depending on what benefits them the most.

2 Timothy 3:16 - All Scripture is God-breathed and useful...
God is telling us that He wrote it.
It's not impossible for a rich person to get to heaven, but because they often see money as protection and security, they trust it more than God.

When we feel like we are providing for ourselves everything on our own, we don’t need Jesus. Pride comes in to play. In weakness, we always seem to want to pray (have a conversation with God) when we have needs that can’t be met with money. Ultimately being a Christian is having a personal relationship with Him. Talking to God on a regular basis. Not just when we need help. Relying on him for everything. Jesus is the ONLY way.

My biggest question is what makes you believe the bible? Genuinely I don’t understand. If I wrote a book that said all the same things but put a different name and maybe made it a woman, would you believe it? Like what makes this book valid and not fictional? What makes this book anymore real than books of other religions or spiritual practices?

You can do that at every scale. Example for a homeless person, I see you have a house and computer, probably food on your table and more than enough, so you are rich. Would you donate everything now to follow said scripture? If that is something you can’t do now, you probably won’t be able to do it ever

I think it comes down to need - if I feel like I can fill all my needs and wants in my own, I’m not going to have a heart of desperate need that’s necessary to come to God with humility. I think it’s hard for a rich person because they’re relying on their own abilities or sense of security rather than realize that we depend on God for our next breath and all we have could be lost in an instant.

I think Jesus challenged the man to do something he knew was very hard for him to accentuate that it is more than “the rules”. What we need to do may be different for each person. Are we willing to put down our own plan to see what is really possible in our lives? It is a journey and not a destination. I mess up every day, but I strive to do better. Some rich people got there through hard work- others through generational wealth. However we get to wealth or comfort, we should still help others. I think people can use the Bible to try to control others. That is the worst blasphemy- in my opinion. It can also be used to help us be better people.

Your positions are your burden. Lay down ALL of your burdens and follow Him. I dont think it has anything to do with wealth. I think it has to so with following Christ by putting God first rather than following the path to riches.

As a Christian I think it's because the whole concept of Christianity is 1) believe in something more powerful than yourself and 2) Accept help from that higher power. Most rich people already think they're the best, brightest, and smartest and don't need help from anyone. This makes it difficult for them to grasp the concept of submitting to someone/something else.

Money is not a blessing or a curse to anyone, whether you’re a believer or not. It’s neutral. For believers it’s most definitely a test! A heart test. Rich AND poor believers will be saved. Rich is relative anyway.

I think sometimes it's easier to disregard faith when you are in a position of money related self reliance. I think a lot of people in that position don't seek faith because they haven't needed to completely rely on it. It's easy to disregard faith in hard times when money contributes to solving your problems, or when you can turn to money or worldly success for fulfillment. I also think many of them surround themselves with people who don't want to rock the boat with deeper conversations like sharing their faith.

For me, it’s about two things, an attachment to worldly possessions and attachment to their personal ego. “They “earned” it so they both want it and want more.” On a side note: the camel had to be unloaded before going through city gates which were made narrow to prevent invasions (eye of the needle) .

IMO I believe the rich are part of the example. I believe the Bible is a blueprint for life. It’s an example of what happens when you place value on possessions over service.

A lot of the Bible is taught out of context. I’ve been watching a pastor currently serving in Puerto Rico that teaches the Bible in historical context. I honestly believe if people learned the Bible this way we’d have sooo many more Christians.

Odds are that they have found a way to dismiss this biblical reference. That’s not to say that they don’t use their money to quiet their guilt later. But in order to make that much money, they had to step on a few people along the way. There may be a few who are just trying their best. But what do I know… 🤷♂️
