@therapistinrecovery: If your therapist is untrained in OCD treatment, they may very well be doing harm. This is because many therapists use reassurance as a means to help clients. And clients with ocd really want reassurance. But reassurance feeds the cycle of OCD. It is very hard as a therapist not to give clients reassurance when it provides such instant relief but it is IMPERATIVE that as therapists, we don’t give in. This doesn’t mean we can’t validate or be compassionate, but it means we can’t give the ocd what it wants and we need to use that opportunity as exposure for skill practice. Reassurance giving is just one of many ways an untrained therapist can be ineffective with OCD (at best). If you’re in therapy, have ocd, and aren’t getting better it may be because your therapist is using theories and helping skills that are contraindicated with ocd and it might be time to find a specialist. Or at least give me a follow and watch more of my videos 😘 #ocd #exposuretherapy #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #ocdawareness #ocdtok

OCD is also not *technically* an anxiety disorder, its been re-evaluated as it's own category

I would be interested, as a therapist, to hear how you treat this. I don’t really treat OCD, anyone with primary OCD I would refer out but there really isn’t many specialists. My instinct would be to treat it like you do anxiety, trauma, exposure therapy or a similar approach. Slowly extinguishing the compulsion by exposing them to the trigger but I guess would that be the “reassurance” you are referring them to?

Yes! I’m an OCD therapist and SOOO many clients come to me saying they have been in therapy for years and just have been being reassured. No ERP it’s insane!

I would like a role play type video to describe what the differences would look like.. as a therapist who at times has clients with OCD and not wanting to “feed” it

BUT sometimes a person appears OCD-ish but is actually undiagnosed autistic (often gifted too) and NEEDS reassurance due to the amount of gaslighting they’ve been through (doc level therapist here)

I discovered that I have OCD recently with my therapist. I noticed that she switched up her responses to some things now. She helps me challenge the compulsions. It’s hard, but helpful!

This is some rigorous honesty! We appreciate your dedication to helping clients get BETTER, not just become a long term client for the sake of it.

I am a therapist who specializes in CBT and play therapy but currently in ERP for my OCD. I was just telling my clinical supervisor I literally feel like ERP is the opposite of CBT!

the relief towards the end of ERP that patients experience make the work so worth it. i love seeing them be able to take back their life and no longer feel trapped by compulsions

My therapist was awful. I went to a new therapist who specialized in OCD. She took something I said wrong, and she called 911. Then she told me she was committing me. (She can’t) The paramedics came, and I explained what happened, and how I have OCD. They went to her and told her she needed to listen better, then they left. I had no choice to complain, and she was removed from the practice. 😳

Sometimes I wish my therapist would just reassure me, but I know that helps nothing lol 😭 one time i mentioned that I was scared I didn’t have ocd and was just lying to her about all my symptoms without realizing and she just looked at me and said ‘Yeah that’s possible, I can’t know if your lying to me. Do you think you’re actually lying or are you just scared that you could have done?’ And I just about crashed out cause I so wanted her to just say, you’re not lying and you do have ocd, you don’t need to worry. But alas that would have been unhelpful in the long run

my therapist keeps mentioning wanting to do cbt type work, but ive tried before and it made me 100% not trust myself and my brain i got so paranoid and my obsessions kept being furthur instigated, my current therapist keeps mentioning cbt, I told her my experience and that for my ocd it hinders it, last session she asked me several questions I know are within cbt framework and I cannot stop ruminating about it and I feel like im driving myself crazy and away for my girlfriend
