My dachshund terrier mix was diagnosed in 2015 and he lived up until 2023. We gave him prescription dog food and he loved it. The insulin shots took a while to get used to but it was an easy routine to get used to morning and night. Other than that, my dog lived a long, happy life. 🥹

ER vet here! Did they also send out a urine culture to make sure he does not have a concurrent UTI? Often times new diabetics have something else going on. Also, ask for a free style libre which will help you monitor his blood sugar levels

At the beginning it’s a lot because you’ll have lots of bloodwork appointments and adjustments to insulin levels and insulin can get pricey. But once you have the right amount down it’s not bad. It’s really easy to give the insulin injections too. When the bad days outweigh the good days then you’ll have to make harder choices. Sending lots of love to your little guy ❤️

My dog has had diabetes for almost 2 years and she is thriving. We switched to prescription food and we do the shots and it’s honestly no big deal. BUT I cried for days after getting the diagnosis, I was so worried and so scared and overwhelmed. I wish I could go back and tell myself from 2 years ago that it would be okay. You got this! 💖

We just started giving our dogs shots every other day for allergies and it isn’t as bad as it sounds. They can barely feel it (if it makes you feel better). Sending Ollie so many good vibes! Also check out the Caesar wrap at little victories in wicker park (they don’t do delivery, but it’s sooooooo good)

I'm sure just like with all things medical they have to tell you worst case scenario but every body/animal is different and respond to treatments in their own way so who knows how sweet Ollie will do! my brother's cat was diagnosed with diabetes and after adjusting his food & taking insulin for a few months he was able to come off the insulin. not sure if that's a possibility for your pup but just wanted to offer that perspective. sending lots of love! 🩷

Our senior dog was diagnosed with diabetes and lived for over three years with it and was really healthy and did just fine. It's definitely a lot of work for you guys as the owners/parents and can be very restricting in terms of the timing and maintenance etc. but it becomes routine and something you all learn to live with. I understand feeling sad but it will be okay. ❤️
