some folks have said that videos help them see things from the perspective of loved ones that are currently in active addiction, in recovery, or have passed away. that makes me feel so good. I want to help people see that addicts are just people with mental health issues, they have a chronic disease of the brain. they should be given the same compassion you would give someone you love who has depression or bipolar disorder. nobody uses drugs with the intention of becoming an addict, every single addict slowly became addicted and told themselves that they always had it under control. you usually don't realize you don't have it under control until it's waaaaaay too out of control. when I first became homeless, I was telling myself stuff like, "this is actually a really good choice! now I don't have to pay rent!" and actually believing it. 😭🤣 having a loved one who is an addict is never easy. finding the balance between enabling them and cutting them off completely is incredibly hard. the worst part? you're watching someone you care about struggling and you know what they need to do to stop that struggle: stop using drugs, go to a rehab or an outpatient recovery program, see if AA/NA is helpful. you know there are many options, but until they're ready to get sober, you can't say anything to convince them that getting sober is the first step towards reversing that downward spiral. telling an addict, "if you get sober and start getting the help you need, you'll be so much happier!" is like telling a newborn baby, "if you would just use *whatever language you speak* to explain what's making you cry, I would be able to accurately help you and you would be so much happier!" or a boomer, "if you just voted for the people who aren't the stupidest humans to ever exist, the entire united states - including you and everyone you care about - would be so much happier!" all you can do is be there for them when they're ready. help them in ways that don't negatively impact your mental health or overall well-being. set boundaries. and try not to give up hope. i know that's easier said than done, but this is the one and only situation where I truly believe that if I could make it to where I am now, every other addict has a chance of doing the same. ❤️🩹 #addiction #recovery #harmreduction #MentalHealth #fyp [an old vid that has never been posted on here before]
