@newsnexussa: British American Tobacco (BAT) is closing its only cigarette manufacturing plant in South Africa because of the growth of illegal cigarette trading. BAT South Africa says it will stop making factory-manufactured cigarettes locally and will shut down its only production facility by the end of the year. The company says the illegal cigarette trade has badly affected the local market. BAT confirmed that a formal consultation process with affected workers and unions began today, 15 January, in line with Section 189A of the Labour Relations Act. This is literally the only firm that has been the lifeblood of many families in Heidelberg .. Sad to see this happening especially because many in the area aspired for a chance to work there someday- because it has been part of the community for decades as the biggest employer. Many have also had an opportunity to see the entrance of a university because of the learnerships and bursaries that the company provided to many young people in the community.😥
