Forgiveness vs reconciliation. If you were taught these are the same thing, you were taught wrong, and it cost you years. Forgiveness is free. Trust is earned. You can release someone completely in your heart, want genuine good for them, hold zero bitterness, and still never hand them the keys to your life again. Those two things live in different rooms. Forgiveness is between you and God. It is a transaction that sets you free from carrying what they did. Reconciliation requires two people, and it requires that the second person actually changed. Repentance is not an apology. Repentance is changed behavior over time. Watch their feet. Feet tell the truth. Mouths do a lot of things, and telling the truth is often not one of them. Reconciliation without repentance is resumed abuse with better manners. Scripture is not soft on this. Proverbs 22:24 says do not associate with a man given to anger. Matthew 18 gives an entire process for someone who refuses to change, and the end of that process is distance. Jesus Himself withdrew from crowds and from people repeatedly. Romans 12:18 is precise: if possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. If possible. So far as it depends on you. Two qualifiers most people were never shown. Boundaries are not unforgiveness. Boundaries are what forgiveness looks like when you also value the temple you live in.
